Concept of the Global University

University is derived from the Latin word   "universitas"  The original Latin word referred to degree-granting institutions of learning in Western Europe , where this form of legal organization was prevalent, and from where the institution spread around the world.

An important idea in the definition of a university is the notion of  academic freedom  . The first documentary evidence of this comes early in the life of the first university. Bologna University , established at Padua , Italy , adopted an academic charter, the Constitutio Habita in 1158 or 1155, which guaranteed the right of a traveling scholar to unhindered passage in the interests of education. Today this is claimed as the origin of "academic freedom". The origin of many  medieval universities  can be traced to the   Christian cathedral schools   or  monastic schools  which appear as early as the 6th century AD and were run for hundreds of years as such before their formal establishment as university in the  high medieval period  . The university spread from its origins in the Medieval Latin west across the globe, becoming the preeminent institution for higher education everywhere, in the following chronological order. Preaching, Teaching, Healing and doing good works are the golden Principles and We at West Coast University at Panama and at its other globally affiliated campuses follow this golden Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ as his humble servant. Historical background of West Coast University: An Institution, namely “West Coast Institute of Management & Technology (WCIMT)” was established in 1996 at Perth, the West Coast of Australia, called Western Australia, by a dedicated Christian family “S. Lloyd Family Trust” to provide Vocational and Professional Educational Services at National and International Levels under a Christian mission and vision of “preaching, teaching, healing and doing good works”.

At National level West Coast Institute of Management & Technology (WCIMT) started operating in 1996 as a duly registered and Accredited Training institution, accredited by the Training   Accreditation Council (TAC) of the Training Department of the Government of Western Australia. WCIMT was also registered on Australian “Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses” (CRICOS), providing accredited courses to local and overseas students up to Graduate Diploma Level.

At International level ‘International Study Department' of West Coast Institute of Management & Technology was established in 1997 to provide Educational Services to International Students in their home countries. WCIMT established a chain of affiliated colleges in many countries. WCIMT experts tailored courses in higher education of vocational and professional disciplines up to Master degree level. The International policy branch of the Department of Education, Employment and Youth Affairs of the Commonwealth Government of Australia confirmed that CRICOS was not required for such courses offered overseas. Office of the Non-Governmental Education of the Government of Western Australian also confirmed that ESPRA registration was not required for such courses offered overseas. These courses were not only accredited by international accrediting bodies but were also articulated by some American, British and Australian Universities but in 2002 had to stop National Department of WCIMT due to health reasons of its Principal & President.

With such exposure and experience at international level WCIMT gathered a team of international educators, experts of curriculum construction, professional and professors to establish a unique International Educational System for administering, developing, offering, promoting courses of higher education to the students of developing nations under accreditation of International Accreditation & Recognition Council (IARC), Queensland Australia and of International Council for Open & distance Education (ICDE) Norway, WCIMT is no more connected with ICDE but do appreciate its cause.

In 2004 the trustees decided to use this infrastructure to establish West Coast University in a favorable Christian Country with its West Coast and on the suggestions and recommendations of international faculty members West Coast University was incorporated at Panama City , capital of the Republic of Panama , under article 19 of law 32 of 1927. Word “West Coast” does have an historical background in Panama . West Coast University although based in Panama but serves as a global institute for higher education catering for the needs of national and international students for innovative education.
